What is special about AgActive products? AgActive socks, bed-sheets and towels kill bacteria and fungus that cause ailments such as smelly feet, itchiness, sores and other skin problems such as athlete's foot (tinea). Because they are completely natural and contain no chemicals, they are totally non-toxic.   How do they work? Very small particles (nanoparticles) of pure silver are infused in the cotton.  Perspiration and moisture electrolyse the silver atoms to produce silver ions (Ag+). The silver ions then "steal" electrons from micro-organisms such as bacteria, viruses and fungi, making them incapable of reproduction and thus killing them. The silver ion then turns back to a silver atom, and the whole process starts again.    Why silver? Silver has been used in medical and therapeutic situations for hundreds of years. It is used in bandages to prevent infection on bad cuts, lesions and burns. It is used in many antibacterial creams/ointments, eye-drops, tooth-fillings, and also in water purification systems. In all of these cases however, silver has been used in different compounds or solutions – eg. silver nitrate, silver sulfadiazine, etc.   If silver has been used for so long, why are these socks such a new idea? The cost of putting pure silver into thread used in socks, sheets and towels in the past would have been prohibitive. However with the latest advances in “nanometer technology”, it is now possible to produce incredibly small particles of pure silver that are infused in the material.   I am allergic to silver jewellery - could I be allergic to your socks? Some people are allergic to silver jewellery, but silver jewellery is actually made of sterling silver which is an alloy. The allergies in fact come from the other metals in the alloy, not from the silver. There have been no documented cases of allergies to pure silver, so it is extremely unlikely our products will cause any allergic reaction.   How long do they last and what happens when I wash them? Because the silver is infused in the material, it will not wash out. In fact the antibacterial effect will normally outlive the products themselves.   What testing has been carried out to prove the antibacterial effectiveness? All our products have undergone extensive laboratory tests to international standards, confirming their effectiveness against bacteria such as Staphylococcus aureus, Bacillus megaterium, Bacillus subtilis, Escherichia coli, Pseudomonas fluorescens and Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus Aureus (MRSA). In all cases the results show that greater than 99.9% of all bacteria are destroyed within 24 hours.   Are your socks comfortable to wear? Yes – they are made from cotton or wool blend. The silver particles are so fine, it is impossible to feel them.   Will they work?
